Mathematics at Oakbank School is grounded in evidence-based teaching methodologies, drawing from the principles of Barack Rosenshine and Doug Lemov.

The department follows the MathsPad curriculum, along with other Greenshaw Learning Trust schools, which is delivered using the "I, We, You" gradual release modelling method used in all Oakbank Methods. Maths incorporates mini whiteboards through the "1, 2, 3 show me" routine for real-time assessment in every lesson. 

To maximize student potential, the curriculum is tiered during Year 9 as part of an explicit drive to enter more students into the Pearson Edexcel  exam board Higher tier paper. Learning is supported outside the classroom by weekly Sparx Maths homework, which features a self-guided component that rewards students for completing optional practice.

Sparx

Sparx Maths is an online platform used to support maths learning by combining digital practice with physical written work in a notebook.

Sparx creates a strategically chosen homework task for each student every week. The questions adapt to the student's ability level so that they can achieve a 100 percent completion rate. Each homework assignment includes a mix of current and past topics to help students remember what they have previously learned. If a student gets stuck on a problem, they can watch a short instructional video attached to that exact question. Students can also choose to complete optional, harder practice to stretch themselves and earn extra experience points.

Sparx is due every Monday and followed by an in-class assessment to consolidate student learning.
